Preview: Citadel Bulldogs at Mercer Bears MACON, Ga. (Interstat) — Two Southern Conference men’s basketball teams heading in opposite directions will meet Wednesday afternoon when the struggling Citadel Bulldogs visit the Mercer Bears at Hawkins Arena. The Bulldogs (3-12) enter on a five-game losing streak, most recently falling 95-86 to Wofford at home on Saturday. Their last victory came against non-Division I opponent Southern Wesleyan on Dec. 9. Citadel’s challenges are underscored by a 49-point output in a loss to East Tennessee State on Dec. 30 and a season scoring low of 41 points in a November defeat to Presbyterian. A bright spot for The Citadel has been forward Sola Adebisi, who is coming off a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds against Wofford. Over his last six games, Adebisi has shown flashes of defensive prowess with multiple blocks in three contests. Mercer (8-7) has faced a tough non-conference schedule, with losses to power conference foes Clemson, Washington State and UCF. The Bears have dropped their first two Southern Conference games, however, falling narrowly at Furman (74-72) and at East Tennessee State (77-71) last week. The Bears are led by forward Brady Shoulders, who posted 21 points and eight rebounds in the loss to ETSU. Shoulders nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds against Furman and dominated in a blowout win over Baptist University with 12 rebounds and five assists in just 16 minutes. Historically, Mercer has held the advantage at home in this series. The Bears’ more balanced offense and experience in close games this season will be tested against a Citadel squad desperate to stop its skid and find consistency beyond Adebisi. Following this matchup, The Citadel returns home to face Western Carolina on Saturday. Mercer continues its homestand, hosting Wofford on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday at Hawkins Arena on the Mercer University campus.
