Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils at BYU Cougars PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — A surging BYU squad riding a nine-game winning streak will host an Arizona State team seeking a resume-defining road victory when the Big 12 rivals meet Wednesday night at the Marriott Center. The Cougars (12-1, 1-0 Big 12) have been one of the nation’s most dominant teams, their lone loss a two-point defeat at Connecticut in mid-November. They are powered by freshman phenom AJ Dybantsa, who is averaging 28.2 points over his last six games. Dybantsa is coming off a 24-point, 8-rebound performance in an 83-73 conference road win at Kansas State on Saturday. BYU’s high-octane offense, which has eclipsed 100 points three times this season, will test an Arizona State defense that has struggled recently. The Sun Devils (9-5, 0-1) have lost three straight, including a 95-89 home loss to Colorado last Saturday. Arizona State will counter with its own standout in center Massamba Diop. The junior is averaging 17 points and 3.2 blocks over his last five contests. He was a force against Colorado, scoring 20 points and swatting seven shots. Guard Maurice Odum, who had 21 points and 12 assists in that loss, provides a potent backcourt complement. The Sun Devils have shown they can compete with top teams, evidenced by a road win at Texas in November, but consistency has been an issue. Containing Dybantsa and the efficient BYU offense, which leads the nation in assists per game, will be their primary challenge. For BYU, protecting home court is paramount in the deep Big 12. A win would solidify their strong start to conference play before a tough stretch that includes road games at Texas Tech and Kansas later this month. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MST. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
