CONWAY, Ark. (Interstat) — Two ASUN Conference men’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet on New Year’s Day when the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles visit the Central Arkansas Bears at the Farris Center on Thursday. The Eagles (6-7) enter on the heels of a dominant 84-43 victory over Fort Lauderdale on Sunday. The Bears (5-8) last played on Dec. 21, falling 99-82 at SMU. Florida Gulf Coast will rely on forward Isaiah Malone, who is coming off a standout performance. In the win over Fort Lauderdale, Malone posted 15 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks in just 20 minutes. His recent play has been inconsistent, however, following a two-point outing in a loss at UCF on Dec. 20. Central Arkansas counters with guard Ty Robinson, who has been a consistent scoring threat. Robinson poured in a season-high 28 points to go with eight rebounds in the loss at SMU. Over his last five games, he is averaging 17 points and has scored in double figures each time. Both teams have struggled against stronger non-conference competition this season. The Eagles have losses to UCF, New Mexico and Florida Atlantic, while the Bears have fallen to SMU, Vanderbilt and Arkansas. Conference play offers a fresh start for each squad. The matchup features a contrast in recent results. Florida Gulf Coast’s blowout win snapped a four-game losing streak. Central Arkansas has lost three of its last four, with the lone win in that stretch a 102-47 rout of non-Division I Kansas Christian. Following this game, Florida Gulf Coast travels to face North Alabama on Saturday. Central Arkansas remains at home to host Stetson on Saturday.
