BOZEMAN, Mont. (Interstat) — A surging Northern Colorado team riding its best start in years will open Big Sky Conference play on New Year’s Day against a Montana State squad looking to build momentum at home. The Bears (10-3) visit the Bobcats (6-7) on Thursday at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in a conference opener for both programs. Northern Colorado enters with a strong non-conference résumé, highlighted by an 86-81 road victory over in-state power Colorado on Dec. 28. That win was fueled by a stellar performance from guard Quinn Denker, who poured in 33 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished eight assists in 37 minutes. Denker has been a catalyst, averaging 22 points and eight assists over his last two full games played. Montana State snapped a two-game skid with a dominant 93-54 home win over Northwest on Dec. 22. Forward Jeremiah Davis posted a double-double in that contest with 12 points and 11 rebounds, showcasing the interior presence the Bobcats will need against a versatile Northern Colorado lineup. The Bears’ offense has been potent, scoring 86 or more points in four of their last five games. Alongside Denker, contributors like Ibu Yamazaki (19 points vs. Colorado) and Brock Wisne provide multiple scoring threats. Montana State has faced a challenging schedule, with four of its seven losses coming by six points or fewer, including an overtime defeat at Utah State. The Bobcats will rely on home-court advantage, where they are 4-1 this season, to counter Northern Colorado’s high-powered attack. This matchup begins a critical early conference stretch for both teams. Northern Colorado aims to validate its strong record, while Montana State seeks an immediate statement win in league play.
