BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging UC Irvine looks to continue its winning momentum against a Cal State Bakersfield squad seeking consistency as the Anteaters visit the Roadrunners on Thursday in a Big West Conference men’s basketball opener. The Anteaters (9-5) enter the New Year’s Day matinee at Icardo Center having won four of their last five, including an 89-70 road victory at Norfolk State on Dec. 22. Guard Derin Saran has been pivotal, averaging 9.0 points and 4.6 assists per game. He is coming off a near double-double with 14 points and nine assists against Norfolk State. Forward Kyle Evans, who scored a season-high 22 points in that game, provides an additional scoring threat. Cal State Bakersfield (6-8) snapped a four-game skid with a narrow 64-63 home win over Idaho on Dec. 23. The Roadrunners have relied on defense and rebounding, led by forward Pierre Geneste. He grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds and blocked two shots in the win over Idaho, anchoring the interior. UC Irvine’s recent success has been fueled by efficient offense, scoring 85 or more points in three of its last five outings. Cal State Bakersfield has struggled defensively during its recent losses, allowing an average of 86.5 points in defeats to UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge earlier in December. The Roadrunners will need to contain Saran’s playmaking and limit second-chance opportunities to protect their home court. UC Irvine aims to leverage its superior record and offensive rhythm to start conference play on a high note. Thursday’s winner gains an early advantage in the Big West standings as both teams embark on a rigorous January conference schedule.
