Preview: Utah at Washington in Big 10 Men’s Basketball SEATTLE (Interstat) — Two teams with identical records and potent offenses will meet Monday night when the Utah Utes visit the Washington Huskies in a nonconference men’s basketball game at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. Both teams enter the Dec. 29 matchup at 8-4, with each looking to build momentum before beginning their respective Big 10 conference schedules in January. The game is part of the league’s scheduling alliance, pairing members of the expanded conference. Utah arrives after a high-scoring 101-77 victory over Eastern Washington on Dec. 20, where the Utes showcased a balanced attack. Guard Don McHenry led the way with 27 points, continuing a stellar stretch. Over his last three games, McHenry is averaging 25.7 points, including a 29-point performance in a loss to Mississippi State on Dec. 13. Washington counters with its own offensive firepower, coming off an 86-56 rout of San Diego on Dec. 22. Forward Hannes Steinbach paced the Huskies with 21 points in that win and has been a consistent scorer, averaging 20.6 points over his last five contests. He scored 29 points in a narrow 82-80 loss to UCLA on Dec. 3. The matchup features contrasting recent trajectories. Utah has won two of its last three, with both victories featuring scores in the 90s or higher. Washington has won three of its last four, with the lone blemish a 70-66 road loss to Seattle University. For Utah, containing Steinbach will be a primary concern, while Washington must devise a plan to slow McHenry’s scoring surge. The Huskies will also need to account for Utah’s supporting cast, including Terrence Brown, who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 assists against Eastern Washington. This marks the final nonconference tune-up for both squads. Utah opens Big 10 play at home against Arizona on Jan. 3, while Washington hits the road to face Indiana on Jan. 4. Monday’s game is scheduled for a 9 p.m. EST tipoff.
