FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum to close non-conference play will meet Monday when the Merrimack Warriors visit the Sacred Heart Pioneers at the William Pitt Center. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup features teams with nearly identical records. Merrimack enters at 6-7, while Sacred Heart is 5-8. Both are looking to rebound from double-digit road losses in their most recent outings. The Warriors fell 66-59 at Vermont on Dec. 14, despite a strong performance from guard Kevair Kennedy. The Pioneers are coming off a 72-47 loss at Towson on Dec. 22. Kennedy is the focal point for Merrimack. The guard has been on a tear, averaging 17.8 points and 5.6 assists over his last five games. He scored 20 points with seven assists in the loss to Vermont and logged 40 minutes in a 68-66 win over Rider on Dec. 4. Sacred Heart will counter with forward Abdou Yadd, who has shown scoring versatility. Yadd poured in 21 points against Mount Saint Mary’s on Dec. 3 and led the Pioneers with 16 points in the loss to Towson. His production has fluctuated, however, with two single-digit scoring efforts mixed in over his last six contests. Merrimack has won three of its last five, including a 59-56 victory at Princeton on Dec. 10. Sacred Heart’s recent form has been inconsistent, alternating wins and losses over its past six games. The game will be the final non-conference tune-up for both programs before MAAC play intensifies in January. Sacred Heart opens its conference slate at Niagara on Jan. 2, while Merrimack hosts Mount Saint Mary’s the same day. Monday’s contest tips off at 7 p.m. EST.
