EAST LANSING, Mich. (Interstat) — A surging Michigan State team riding a five-game win streak will host a Cornell squad looking to build momentum in nonconference play when the Spartans face the Big Red at Breslin Events Center on Monday, Dec. 29, 2025. The Spartans (11-1) have established themselves as a force early this season, with their lone loss a narrow 66-60 defeat to then-Duke on Dec. 6. Since then, Michigan State has recorded quality wins over Iowa, Penn State and most recently a 79-70 victory over Oakland on Dec. 20. Tom Izzo’s squad has been dominant defensively, holding opponents to an average of 64.2 points per game. A key to their success has been the interior presence of forward Jaxon Kohler. The junior is coming off a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double against Oakland and has averaged 13 points and 7.2 rebounds over his last five contests. His matchup inside will be pivotal. Cornell (6-5) arrives after an 83-75 road win at Albany on Dec. 21, which snapped a three-game skid. The Big Red have shown offensive firepower, scoring 80 or more points in seven games, but have struggled defensively against high-major competition, allowing an average of 94 points in losses to George Mason, Towson and Samford. The Big Red will rely heavily on guard Cooper Noard, who is averaging 18.4 points per game. Noard scored 25 points in the win over Albany and had 23 in the close loss at Samford. His perimeter scoring will be essential for Cornell to keep pace. This game marks the final nonconference tune-up for both teams before league play begins. Michigan State opens Big Ten play at Nebraska on Jan. 2, while Cornell starts its Ivy League schedule against Columbia on Jan. 5. The Spartans hold a significant advantage in experience and defensive pedigree, but Cornell’s potent offense, led by Noard, poses a threat if it gets hot from the outside. Michigan State will look to control the paint with Kohler and its frontcourt to secure its 12th win before turning to conference action.
