STARKVILLE, Miss. (Interstat) — The Mississippi State Bulldogs will look to carry momentum from a three-game winning streak into their final non-conference test when they host the struggling Alabama State Hornets on Monday, Dec. 29, at Humphrey Coliseum. Mississippi State (7-5) has found its rhythm in December, winning four of its last five, including a 71-66 victory over Memphis on Dec. 20. The Bulldogs’ offense has been powered by guard Jayden Epps, who has scored 19 or more points in four of his last five outings. He is averaging 18.8 points per game during that stretch. Alabama State (3-9) enters on a five-game skid, all on the road, and has lost nine of its last ten. The Hornets are coming off an 88-67 loss at Memphis on Dec. 22. Guard Tyler Byrd has been a bright spot, averaging 10.5 points over the last four games, including a 15-point performance against Tennessee-Martin on Dec. 7. The Bulldogs have relied on balanced scoring behind Epps, with Josh Hubbard (17 points vs. Memphis) and Shawn Jones providing consistent support. Alabama State will need significant contributions beyond Byrd, as Asjon Anderson (16 points vs. Memphis) and Damarien Yates (13 points vs. Memphis) showed they are capable. This matchup marks the final tune-up for both teams before conference play begins. Mississippi State opens its Southeastern Conference schedule with a daunting trip to Texas on Jan. 3. Alabama State begins Southwestern Athletic Conference action at Mississippi Valley State on Jan. 3. The Bulldogs hold a distinct advantage in experience and record against high-major competition this season. Alabama State’s lone win against a Division I opponent came against UAB on Nov. 11, and the Hornets have faced a gauntlet of road games, going 1-9 away from home. Tipoff is set for Monday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum, where Mississippi State will aim to solidify its winning record before SEC play.
