ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — The Elon Phoenix will look to continue its strong non-conference play and extend its home winning streak when it hosts the struggling Northeastern Huskies in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball matchup on Monday, Dec. 29. Elon (8-5) enters the contest having won four of its last five games, including a dominant 97-63 victory over Greensboro in its most recent outing on Dec. 22. The Phoenix are 5-1 at Schar Center this season. Northeastern (4-7) seeks to halt a three-game skid, most recently falling 85-77 at Rhode Island on Dec. 22. The Huskies are 1-6 in road games. A key matchup will feature two of the conference’s hottest scorers. Elon is led by guard Chandler Cuthrell, who has averaged 21.2 points over his last five games. He scored 21 points in just 18 minutes against Greensboro. Northeastern will counter with guard Ryan Williams, who has emerged as a primary offensive threat. Williams is coming off back-to-back 20-point performances, scoring 21 against Rhode Island and 20 at Syracuse. Elon’s offense has been potent, averaging 84.2 points per game during its recent 4-1 stretch. The Phoenix have shown resilience, with their only loss in that span coming in an 82-81 overtime heartbreaker at Virginia Tech. The Huskies have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 82.6 points during their three consecutive losses. Generating consistent offense outside of Williams remains a challenge for Northeastern. This game serves as the CAA opener for both teams. They will meet again in Boston on Jan. 15. Following this contest, Elon will host College of Charleston on Dec. 31. Northeastern will visit North Carolina A&T on New Year’s Eve.
