Preview: UMBC Retrievers at Coppin State Eagles BALTIMORE (Interstat) — A pair of Baltimore-area men’s basketball programs seeking momentum will meet Monday when the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers visit the Coppin State Eagles at the Coppin State Physical Education Complex. The Retrievers (6-6) enter the non-conference finale looking to snap a three-game skid and return to .500. UMBC is coming off a 94-69 road loss at South Florida on Dec. 21. The Eagles (2-13) have lost seven straight, most recently a 97-67 defeat at Georgetown on Dec. 22. UMBC’s offense will run through guard Jah’Likai King, who has been a consistent bright spot during the losing streak. He is averaging 17.8 points over his last five games, including a 20-point effort against South Florida. King has scored 19 or more points in three of those contests. Coppin State, which has faced a grueling road schedule with 11 away games, will rely on guard Khali Horton. He is coming off one of his best performances of the season, scoring 18 points against Georgetown. Horton’s production has been variable, but he leads a team struggling to find consistent scoring. The Retrievers have shown they can win close games, with overtime victories over Wagner and Morgan State, but have also suffered several double-digit losses. Their most decisive win was a 102-52 rout of Notre Dame on Nov. 24. Coppin State’s two wins came against Rider (68-65) on Nov. 25 and over non-Division I Central Penn (103-62) on Nov. 18. The Eagles have allowed 88 or more points in six of their last seven games. This game represents a final tune-up before league play begins for both. UMBC opens America East Conference action at home against Maine on Jan. 8. Coppin State begins Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on the road at Delaware State on Jan. 3. Monday’s tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
