FAIRBORN, Ohio (Interstat) — Two teams looking to steady their nonconference records will meet Monday when the Eastern Michigan Eagles visit the Wright State Raiders at the Ervin J. Nutter Center. The Eagles (6-5) enter on a two-game skid, including a 65-80 loss at Purdue Fort Wayne on Dec. 10. The Raiders (5-7) have also lost two straight, most recently a 76-83 home defeat to Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 16. Both squads will aim to build momentum before entering their respective conference schedules in January. Eastern Michigan’s offense will run through guard Mohammad Habhab. The standout is averaging 14.2 points over his last five games, including a 22-point performance in a win over NJIT on Nov. 28. His ability to score and facilitate will be crucial against a Wright State defense that has allowed an average of 75.2 points in its seven losses. Wright State will counter with its own high-scoring guard in Michael Cooper. He has been on a tear, pouring in 21 and 22 points in his last two outings. Cooper’s scoring burst, which includes a 23-point game in a rout of Green Bay on Dec. 7, will test an Eastern Michigan team that has shown defensive vulnerability on the road, surrendering 87 points at Louisville and 84 at Butler this season. The matchup hinges on which team can impose its defensive will. Eastern Michigan has held opponents under 65 points in four of its six wins, while Wright State is 5-1 when holding foes to 76 points or fewer. The Raiders will need to contain Habhab and find consistent scoring beyond Cooper to snap their losing streak. Monday’s contest is the final nonconference tune-up for both programs. Eastern Michigan opens Mid-American Conference play Jan. 3 against Ohio, while Wright State begins Horizon League action Jan. 1 against Milwaukee. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
