Preview: Struggling Rider Faces VCU in Nonconference Finale RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — The VCU Rams look to close their nonconference schedule with momentum when they host the struggling Rider Broncs on Monday, Dec. 22, at the Siegel Center. VCU (8-4) enters on a two-game winning streak, including a 105-83 offensive showcase against American on Dec. 18. The Rams have found success at home, boasting a 7-1 record in Richmond this season. Rider (1-9) seeks to halt a nine-game losing skid. The Broncs’ sole victory came in their home opener against Eastern on Nov. 15. They are coming off a 57-65 loss at Delaware on Dec. 16, their fourth consecutive defeat by a single-digit margin. A key matchup will feature the backcourts. VCU sophomore guard Nyk Lewis has been a catalyst, averaging 12.3 points and 3.4 assists over his last seven games. He dished out a season-high six assists in the win over American. Rider will rely on guard Flash Burton, who scored 16 points in the loss to Delaware and has averaged 10.4 points per game during the losing streak. He and teammates Shemani Fuller and Davis Bynum will need efficient performances to challenge VCU’s defensive pressure. The Rams have dominated recent home games, winning by an average of 24.3 points in their last three victories at Siegel Center. Rider, meanwhile, has faced a tough road slate, with losses at power conference programs Texas, Houston and Virginia. This game concludes nonconference play for both teams. VCU opens Atlantic 10 Conference action on Dec. 31 against Saint Bonaventure. Rider begins Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Dec. 29 against Manhattan. Monday’s contest tips off at 7 p.m. EST.
