ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — A surging Georgia men’s basketball team, boasting one of the nation’s best records, will look to maintain its momentum when it hosts in-state foe West Georgia on Monday, Dec. 22, at Stegeman Coliseum. The Bulldogs (10-1) have been dominant, averaging 99.5 points per game during a five-game winning streak that includes a 112-82 rout of Western Carolina last Thursday. Their lone blemish is an overtime loss to Clemson. Georgia is led by high-scoring guard Jeremiah Wilkinson, who has been remarkably efficient. Over his last five games, Wilkinson is averaging 22.2 points in just 23.2 minutes per contest, including a 26-point outburst in 19 minutes against Western Carolina. “We’re sharing the ball and playing with great energy,” Georgia coach Mike White said. “Jeremiah’s scoring ability opens everything up for us, but we’re getting contributions from everyone.” The visiting West Georgia Wolves (6-5), transitioning to NCAA Division I, face a steep challenge. They are 0-3 against power conference opponents this season, with losses to Georgia Tech, UCLA and Nebraska. The Wolves are coming off a 70-49 win over NAIA Brewton-Parker but have struggled against higher-level competition, including a 59-87 loss to Tennessee Tech earlier this month. West Georgia will rely on guard Kolten Griffin, who is coming off an 11-point, 5-assist performance. Griffin logged 43 minutes in a double-overtime win at Troy on Dec. 1, showing his durability. “Georgia is elite, obviously,” West Georgia coach Dave Moore said. “For us, it’s about competing for 40 minutes, controlling tempo and limiting mistakes. We have to be at our very best.” The Bulldogs’ offense, which has topped 100 points four times this season, will test a West Georgia defense that allowed 91 points to Georgia Southern and 87 to Tennessee Tech. Georgia also holds a significant rebounding edge, outboarding opponents by an average of 12 per game. This is the first meeting between the programs since 2006. Following this contest, Georgia will host Long Island on Dec. 29 before opening Southeastern Conference play. West Georgia begins Atlantic Sun Conference action on Jan. 1. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
