Preview: Sacramento State Hornets at Cal State Northridge Matadors LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — The Cal State Northridge Matadors, riding a four-game winning streak, will look to continue their momentum when they host the Sacramento State Hornets in a nonconference men’s basketball game Monday at Matadome. The Matadors (7-5) have found their rhythm in December, averaging 88.3 points during their current win streak, which includes victories over Fresno State and Delaware. A key catalyst has been guard Davius Loury, who is averaging 13.7 points over his last three contests. He scored 17 points in just 23 minutes in Friday’s 88-53 rout of La Sierra. “We’re sharing the ball and playing with a lot more confidence on both ends,” said Cal State Northridge coach. “Davius has been aggressive and efficient, which opens things up for everyone.” Sacramento State (4-6) enters following a 20-day break for finals, last playing in a 110-88 road loss to then-Baylor on Dec. 2. The Hornets showed offensive spark against the Bears, with guards Prophet Johnson and Mikey Williams each scoring 21 points. However, defensive consistency has been an issue; the Hornets have allowed 90 or more points in four of their six losses. “The break gave us a chance to reset and really focus on our defensive principles,” said Sacramento State coach. “Northridge is playing at a high level offensively, so it will be a great test for us.” The Hornets’ record is somewhat deceptive, with five of their six losses coming against high-major opponents (Baylor, UCLA, California) or teams with strong early-season records. Their most recent road win was a 103-79 victory over Dominican on Nov. 4. For Cal State Northridge, this game serves as final preparation before a tough road test at Stanford on Dec. 27. The Matadors are 5-1 at home this season. Sacramento State begins Big Sky Conference play on Jan. 1 at Idaho State. The matchup pits Northridge’s surging offense against a Sacramento State team seeking a statement road win before league play begins. Containing Loury and the Matadors’ balanced attack, which saw Jai Chisolm add 12 points and eight rebounds against La Sierra, will be the primary challenge for the Hornets. Monday’s game tips off at 7 p.m. PST.
