PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — A surging BYU squad riding a nine-game winning streak hosts a struggling Eastern Washington team in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup Monday night at the Marriott Center. The No. 6-ranked Cougars (10-1) have been dominant since their only loss, an 86-84 defeat at then-Connecticut on Nov. 15. Their average margin of victory during the streak is 26.2 points, highlighted by a 100-53 rout of UC Riverside on Dec. 13 and a 93-57 win over Pacific last Tuesday. BYU’s offense is fueled by freshman phenom AJ Dybantsa, who is averaging 23.5 points per game. The 6-foot-8 guard is coming off a career-high 35-point performance in an 85-67 victory over Abilene Christian on Friday, where he also added four assists and a block. Over his last five games, Dybantsa has scored at least 23 points four times. The Eastern Washington Eagles (2-9) enter on a five-game skid, most recently a 78-63 home loss to Washington State on Wednesday. Their two wins this season came against Division II Eastern Oregon and Missouri-Kansas City. Guard Alton Hamilton has been a bright spot for the Eagles, averaging 14.2 points over his last six contests. He scored 16 points in the loss to Washington State and had 18 in a narrow 88-83 defeat to California Baptist on Dec. 12. Isaiah Moses, who had 15 points and five assists against the Cougars, provides backcourt support. The matchup presents a stark contrast in trajectories. BYU, which leads the nation in scoring margin (+27.4), will look to leverage its size, depth, and explosive transition game against an Eastern Washington defense allowing 81.5 points per game. The Eagles rank 348th out of 362 Division I teams in defensive efficiency. For Eastern Washington, containing Dybantsa and weathering the Cougars’ offensive barrage in a hostile environment will be the primary challenge. BYU is 6-0 at home this season, winning by an average of 32.8 points. This game concludes the nonconference schedule for both teams. BYU opens Big 12 play at Kansas State on Jan. 3, while Eastern Washington begins Big Sky Conference action at Idaho on the same date. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST Monday.
