KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — The Austin Peay Governors look to climb back above .500 when they visit the struggling Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos in a non-conference men’s basketball matchup Sunday at Municipal Auditorium. Austin Peay (5-5) enters off a 12-day break following a dramatic 76-75 home win over East Tennessee State on Dec. 12. The Governors have shown resilience, with all five losses coming on the road against opponents like Mississippi and Kent State. The Governors are led by guard Zyree Collins, who is coming off a career-high 25-point, nine-assist performance in the win over ETSU. Over his last three games, Collins is averaging 16.7 points and 7.0 assists. He forms a potent backcourt with Matt Enright, who scored 17 points in the last outing. Forward Rashaud Marshall adds an interior presence, posting 17 points and two blocks against the Buccaneers. UMKC (2-11) seeks to halt a two-game skid after losses at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State last week. The Kangaroos’ only wins this season came against lower-division Spurgeon and Idaho State. They have struggled defensively, allowing 80.2 points per game. A bright spot for the Kangaroos has been guard Jayson Petty, who has scored in double figures in seven of his last eight games. He tallied 16 points against Oklahoma State and 12 against Oklahoma last week. Karmello Branch, who had 18 points and four assists against the Cowboys, provides additional backcourt scoring. The game represents a final non-conference tune-up for both programs before league play begins in January. Austin Peay will open ASUN Conference action on Jan. 1, while UMKC begins Summit League play on Dec. 31. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon, with the Governors aiming for a road victory and the Kangaroos looking for a momentum-shifting win on their home floor.
