Preview: Mississippi Rebels at North Carolina State Wolfpack GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — Two teams looking to build momentum before conference play clash Sunday when the Mississippi Rebels face the North Carolina State Wolfpack in a nonconference men’s basketball game at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Wolfpack (8-4) enter ranked after a dominant 108-72 victory over Texas Southern on Wednesday, a game highlighted by a historic performance from sophomore guard Paul McNeil. McNeil exploded for a career-high 47 points, shooting 17 of 24 from the field, including 10 of 14 from 3-point range. His scoring outburst, coming off a quiet 4-point game in a narrow overtime loss to Kansas, makes him the focal point for the Rebels’ defense. “When a player gets that hot, it changes your entire defensive game plan,” Mississippi coach Chris Beard said. “Our focus is on making things difficult for him and limiting their offensive rebounds.” Mississippi (7-4) rides a two-game winning streak after an 80-66 win over Alabama A&M. The Rebels are led by junior forward Malik Dia, who scored 27 points in that victory. Dia has been a consistent force, averaging 18.2 points over his last five games. Support comes from guards AJ Storr (14 points Wednesday) and Ilias Kamardine, who dished out eight assists against Alabama A&M. North Carolina State’s offense, averaging 86.2 points per game, presents a significant challenge. Beyond McNeil, the Wolfpack feature balanced contributors like Alyn Breed and playmaker Quadir Copeland, who had nine assists Wednesday. “They’re explosive and well-coached,” Beard said of the Wolfpack. “We have to control the tempo and value every possession.” Mississippi has struggled away from home, with all four losses coming on neutral courts or true road games. North Carolina State is 6-1 at home this season, with the only loss the one-point overtime defeat to then-Kansas. For the Wolfpack, this game serves as a final tune-up before Atlantic Coast Conference play begins next week. For the Rebels, it’s a prime opportunity for a resume-building win ahead of their Southeastern Conference schedule. “This is exactly the kind of test we need,” said NC State coach Kevin Keatts. “Mississippi is physical, they defend, and they have multiple guys who can score. It will be a great challenge for our team.” Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. EST Sunday. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
