MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — The Campbell Fightin’ Camels and Minnesota Golden Gophers, teams with mirroring records seeking momentum before conference play, meet Sunday at Williams Arena. Campbell (5-6) arrives following a 70-98 road loss at Gonzaga on Wednesday. Minnesota (6-5) last played on Dec. 14, rolling to an 89-53 home victory over Texas Southern. The matchup features two of the nation’s more productive scorers. Campbell’s offense runs through guard DJ Smith, who averages 18.3 points per game. He is coming off an 18-point effort at Gonzaga and has scored 19 or more in three of his last five outings. He will be countered by Minnesota’s standout forward Cade Tyson, who is averaging 21.2 points. Tyson is playing at an elite level, coming off a career-high 38-point, 11-rebound performance against Texas Southern. Over his last three games, he is averaging 23.3 points. The Golden Gophers have found success at home, going 5-1 at Williams Arena this season. Their lone blemish was a 75-86 loss to Santa Clara on Nov. 28. Campbell is 1-4 in true road games, with its win coming at Texas-Arlington last month. The Fightin’ Camels have shown a high-powered offense at times, including a 149-point outburst against Virginia-Lynchburg on Dec. 7, but have struggled against high-major competition. For Minnesota, this game serves as a final tune-up before Big Ten Conference play begins Jan. 3 at Northwestern. Campbell opens Coastal Athletic Association play on Jan. 3 against Northeastern. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon. The Golden Gophers will rely on their home-court advantage and Tyson’s hot hand, while the Fightin’ Camels look to Smith to engineer an upset and level their season record.
