AMES, Iowa (Interstat) — An undefeated Iowa State squad riding its best start in years will look to extend its streak Sunday when it hosts a struggling Long Beach State team at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones (11-0), one of just four remaining unbeaten teams in Division I, have dominated their schedule with a nation-leading average margin of victory of 29.5 points. Their resume includes a commanding 81-58 road win at then-Purdue on Dec. 6 and a hard-fought 66-62 victory over in-state rival Iowa. Coach T.J. Otzelberger’s team is powered by a stifling defense that ranks first nationally in efficiency and a balanced offense. Point guard Tamin Lipsey is the engine, averaging 12.1 points, 6.5 assists and 2.7 steals. He is coming off a nine-point, seven-assist performance in a 78-53 rout of Eastern Illinois on Dec. 14. They face a Long Beach State team (3-9) that has endured a difficult non-conference slate, though the 49ers are coming off an 81-78 home win over Pepperdine on Thursday. Coach Dan Monson’s team has shown fight, with three of its last five losses coming in overtime, including an 89-83 defeat at San Jose State on Dec. 9. The 49ers will lean on guard Petar Majstorovic, who is averaging 18.0 points per game. He scored 20 points in the win over Pepperdine and has topped 20 points in three of his last five contests. Iowa State has not started 12-0 since the 2013-14 season. Long Beach State is 0-3 on the road this season and has not faced an opponent of Iowa State’s caliber. The Cyclones’ defense, which forces over 19 turnovers per game, will present a monumental challenge for a 49ers team seeking a season-defining upset before opening Big West play. The game tips off at 5 p.m. CST Sunday. Iowa State will host Houston Christian on Dec. 29 to close its non-conference schedule. Long Beach State returns home to face Lincoln on Dec. 30.
