SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum before conference play begins will meet Sunday when the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks face the Incarnate Word Cardinals at McDermott Convocation Center. Both teams enter the nonconference finale with identical 5-6 records. Northern Arizona snapped a four-game losing streak with a 65-57 home win over Southern Utah on Thursday. Incarnate Word has lost three straight, including a narrow 69-65 defeat at TCU on Monday. The matchup features two of the nation’s most prolific scorers. Northern Arizona’s Ryan Abelman is coming off a 24-point performance against Southern Utah, his third 20-point game this season. The guard is averaging 15.1 points per game and has been a consistent offensive engine, logging over 30 minutes in each of his last seven contests. He will be countered by Incarnate Word’s dynamic Davion Bailey. The guard is averaging 22.3 points over his last four games, including a 32-point outburst at TCU and a 29-point effort in a win over McNeese State on Dec. 1. Bailey’s scoring prowess will be central to the Cardinals’ hopes of halting their skid. Northern Arizona has struggled on the road, going 1-5 away from Flagstaff with losses at Arizona State, San Diego and a one-point defeat at North Dakota State. The Lumberjacks will need contributions beyond Abelman; forward Karl Poom added 10 points in the win over Southern Utah. Incarnate Word, playing its first home game since Dec. 1, has shown resilience in close losses, falling by four at TCU and one at New Orleans. Guard Tahj Staveskie, who had nine points and five assists against TCU, provides a key secondary playmaking role alongside Bailey. This game serves as a final tune-up before both teams dive into league action. Northern Arizona opens Big Sky play at Montana on Jan. 1, while Incarnate Word hosts Southeastern Louisiana on Dec. 30 to begin Southland Conference competition.
