PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum before conference play begins will meet Sunday when the Drexel Dragons host the Maine Black Bears in a nonconference men’s basketball game at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons (4-7) have lost three straight, most recently a 74-66 home defeat to Howard on Tuesday. In that game, guard Kevon Vanderhorst erupted for a career-high 30 points, adding four assists. Vanderhorst, a player to watch for Drexel, has been inconsistent but capable of high-scoring outbursts, as shown by his 16-point performance in a win over Old Dominion last month. Maine (1-11) arrives in Philadelphia mired in a difficult season, with its lone win coming at Boston University on Dec. 10. The Black Bears are coming off one of their worst offensive showings, a 70-43 home loss to Canisius on Dec. 13. In that game, guard Keelan Steele led the team with 12 points. Steele, Maine’s player to watch, has been a bright spot, averaging double figures in scoring over his last five games, including a 14-point effort at Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 6. The matchup presents a critical opportunity for both squads to gain confidence. Drexel will look to leverage its home court and Vanderhorst’s scoring punch to snap its skid. For Maine, limiting turnovers and finding consistent scoring beyond Steele will be essential to compete. This game concludes the 2025 calendar year for both programs. Drexel opens Coastal Athletic Association play on Dec. 29 at the College of Charleston, while Maine, a member of the America East Conference, hosts Me.-Fort Kent on Dec. 30 before its league slate begins in January. Tip-off is set for Sunday afternoon.
