BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — Two of the nation’s hottest non-conference teams will meet Sunday when the Columbia Lions visit the California Golden Bears at Haas Pavilion. Columbia (9-2) brings a potent offense west, averaging 82.5 points per game, but is looking to rebound from its second loss. The Lions fell 77-73 in overtime at Stony Brook on Dec. 9 in their most recent outing. They are led by dynamic guard Kenny Noland, who scored 24 points with nine assists in that defeat. Over his last six games, Noland is averaging 19.5 points and 5.3 assists, serving as the engine for a squad that has topped 90 points four times this season. California (10-1) has won six straight since its only blemish, a 99-96 road loss to Kansas State on Nov. 13. The Golden Bears’ defense has been a hallmark, holding opponents to 70.2 points per game. Their offense runs through forward John Camden, who is coming off a 25-point performance in a 79-70 win over Northwestern State on Dec. 13. Camden has scored in double figures in nine of 11 games and provides a consistent scoring threat. The matchup pits Columbia’s high-paced attack against California’s disciplined, defensive-minded approach. The Lions will need production beyond Noland, with Ryan Soulis (12 points, four blocks vs. Stony Brook) likely playing a key role inside. For the Golden Bears, balancing Camden’s scoring with the backcourt play of Semetri Carr, who had 14 points and seven assists last game, will be critical. This game serves as a final major non-conference test for both before league play begins. Columbia opens Ivy League action Jan. 5 at Cornell, while California starts a rugged Atlantic Coast Conference slate Jan. 7 at Virginia. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. PST Sunday.
