Preview: River Hawks Visit Terriers in Nonconference Finale BOSTON (Interstat) â Two menâs NCAA Division I basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Sunday when the Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks face the Boston University Terriers at Agganis Arena. The nonconference finale for both squads features teams with similar records. The visiting River Hawks (5-8) enter having snapped a two-game skid with an 87-82 home win over Sacred Heart on Tuesday. The Terriers (4-8) look to halt a four-game losing streak, most recently a 77-64 defeat at Dartmouth on Dec. 13. A key matchup will feature standout guards. Massachusetts-Lowellâs Xavier Spencer is coming off a 20-point performance against Sacred Heart and has averaged 15.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists over his last five games. For Boston University, Ben Defty has been a consistent presence, averaging 12.2 points and 4.7 rebounds over his last six contests. He posted 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the loss to Dartmouth. The River Hawksâ offense, which exploded for 122 points in a win over Fisher on Dec. 10, will test a Terriersâ defense that has allowed an average of 78.5 points during its current losing streak. In Tuesdayâs win, Austin Green added 22 points and Darrel Yepdo had 16 points and five assists alongside Spencerâs 20. Boston Universityâs schedule has been challenging, with four of its last five losses coming on the road. Returning to Agganis Arena, where they are 3-3 this season, could provide a boost. Michael McNair (14 points vs. Dartmouth) and Chance Gladden (12 points, 4 assists) are secondary scoring options behind Defty. This game is the final tune-up before each team begins its conference slate. Massachusetts-Lowell opens America East play on Jan. 3, while Boston University starts Patriot League action on Dec. 31. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon. The River Hawks hold a 9-7 advantage in the all-time series, though the programs have not met since 2019.
