PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum before the holiday break will meet Friday afternoon when the Mount Saint Mary’s Mountaineers visit the Drexel Dragons in nonconference men’s basketball. The game at Daskalakis Athletic Center will feature a pair of struggling squads. Drexel (4-7) has lost three straight, most recently a 74-66 home defeat to Howard on Tuesday. Mount Saint Mary’s (3-8) snapped a five-game skid with an 81-73 road win at Loyola Maryland on Dec. 13. The matchup will spotlight two of the region’s top guards. Drexel’s Kevon Vanderhorst is coming off a career-high 30-point performance in the loss to Howard, adding four assists. The sophomore has scored in double figures in four of his last six games and will be the focal point of the Dragons’ offense. For the Mountaineers, Xavier Lipscomb provides steady leadership. The guard is averaging 8.8 points and 4.8 assists per game and is coming off a 16-point effort in the win at Loyola Maryland. His backcourt play will be critical against Drexel’s pressure. Both teams have faced challenging early schedules. Mount Saint Mary’s losses include road games at Ohio State, Cincinnati and West Virginia. Drexel’s defeats have come against a mix of local rivals and power conference opponents like Syracuse. The Dragons hold a slight edge playing at home, where they are 3-3 this season. The Mountaineers are 1-6 in true road games, with their lone win coming in their last outing. Following this game, Drexel will host Maine on Sunday before opening Coastal Athletic Association play. Mount Saint Mary’s will also play at home Sunday against Penn State Brandywine before beginning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action in January.
