Preview: Eastern Michigan Eagles at Akron Zips AKRON, Ohio (Interstat) — The Akron Zips look to rebound from a rare high-scoring defeat when they host the Eastern Michigan Eagles in a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball opener Friday at James A. Rhodes Arena. Akron (8-3) enters the contest with the more impressive overall record but is coming off a 115-100 home loss to Murray State on Dec. 13. The Zips’ typically stout defense was absent in that outing, marking the first time they have allowed 100 points this season. The Zips are led by dynamic guard Tavari Johnson, who is averaging 21.9 points and 5.5 assists per game. He scored 28 points in the loss to Murray State and has topped 35 points in a game this season. His playmaking will be central against an Eastern Michigan defense that has shown inconsistency. Eastern Michigan (6-5) has alternated wins and losses over its past six games, most recently falling 80-65 at Purdue Fort Wayne on Dec. 10. The Eagles have struggled offensively at times, scoring 65 or fewer points in three of their five losses. The Eagles will rely on guard Mohammad Habhab, their leading scorer at 17.5 points per game. Habhab has been a consistent offensive force, scoring in double figures in every game this season, including a 24-point, 9-assist performance in a win over Oakland on Nov. 21. Historically, Akron has dominated the series, winning 15 of the last 16 meetings. The Zips have also been strong at home, boasting a 6-1 record at Rhodes Arena this season. Eastern Michigan is 1-4 in true road games. The matchup pits Akron’s high-powered offense, averaging 92.5 points per game, against an Eastern Michigan team allowing just 69.5 points per contest. The Eagles must control the tempo and limit Johnson’s penetration to have a chance on the road. Following this game, Eastern Michigan visits Wright State on Dec. 22. Akron’s next game is at home against Concord on Dec. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Friday.
