BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — The UAB Blazers, riding high after a key road win, return home to face the Troy Trojans in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup Sunday at Bartow Arena. UAB (7-3) enters off a 74-69 victory at Drake last Friday, a quality result that highlighted the team’s resilience. The Blazers’ season has been marked by potent offense, averaging 84.2 points per game, but also occasional road struggles, including a 76-61 loss at Middle Tennessee on Dec. 1. A primary catalyst for UAB is versatile guard Chance Westry. Over his last six games, Westry has averaged 12.5 points, 5.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds, showcasing an all-around game. He posted 17 points and two blocks in the win at Drake, following a triple-double of 10 points and 11 assists against South Alabama on Nov. 21. Troy (6-5) arrives after a dominant 101-47 rout of LaGrange on Dec. 6. The Trojans have played a dramatic schedule, with four of their 11 games requiring overtime, including a triple-overtime loss at Southern California and a double-overtime win at San Diego State in November. They average 88.5 points per game but allow 86.4. Guard Evan Griffin is a key figure for the Trojans, coming off a 14-point performance in 21 minutes against LaGrange. Troy’s high-scoring, fast-paced style will test a UAB defense that has held opponents to 70.9 points per game. This contest represents a final tune-up before both teams dive into extended conference play. UAB begins its American Athletic Conference slate on Jan. 6, while Troy opens Sun Belt Conference action on Dec. 31. The Blazers hold a 5-2 all-time series advantage over the Trojans, with the last meeting occurring in 2013. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon.
