FAIRLAWN, Va. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum before the holiday break will meet Sunday when the Radford Highlanders host the Coppin State Eagles in a nonconference men’s basketball game at the D.N. Dedmon Center. The Highlanders (4-7) are coming off their most dominant performance of the season, an 89-56 rout of Saint Francis (Pa.) on Dec. 7. Guard Jaylon Johnson keyed that victory with 18 points and seven assists, continuing a strong stretch where he has averaged 16.3 points over his last three games. Radford’s offense has shown flashes, scoring 102 points in a win over Notre Dame on Nov. 29, but consistency has been an issue during a 2-5 stretch prior to the Saint Francis win. Coppin State (2-10) arrives looking to halt a five-game skid, all coming on the road by an average margin of 28.2 points. The Eagles fell 87-65 at Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday. Guard Nelson Lamizana has been a bright spot, scoring in double figures in four of the last five games, including 13 points in the loss to the Hawks. The Eagles’ only wins this season came against non-Division I Central Penn and a 68-65 victory at Rider on Nov. 25. Defensive struggles have plagued Coppin State, which has allowed 87 or more points in eight of its 10 losses. Radford will look to exploit that with a balanced attack; in the win over Saint Francis, Lukas Walls added 14 points and Dennis Parker had nine points and four rebounds. This marks the first meeting between the programs since 2019. For Coppin State, it is the final tune-up before Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play begins in January. Radford opens Big South Conference action on Dec. 31. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon. Radford travels to William & Mary on Thursday, while Coppin State’s lengthy road swing continues at Navy on Dec. 19.
