Preview: Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at New Mexico Lobos ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Interstat) — The New Mexico Lobos look to continue their strong start and protect their home court when they host the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in a nonconference men’s basketball game Sunday at The Pit. New Mexico (8-2) enters riding a four-game winning streak, most recently an 81-78 road victory at VCU on Wednesday. The Lobos have been dominant at home, winning all five contests in Albuquerque by an average margin of 32.4 points. The Lobos are led by guard Jake Hall, who is coming off a 24-point performance against VCU. Hall has scored 20 or more points in four of his last five games, providing consistent offensive firepower for a team averaging 84.1 points per game. Florida Gulf Coast (5-5) seeks to steady itself after back-to-back narrow losses. The Eagles fell 81-76 to Florida Atlantic last Sunday and 89-83 at Florida International on Dec. 3. Three of their five losses this season have been by six points or fewer. The Eagles will rely on guard JR Konieczny, their most potent scorer. Konieczny is averaging 18.1 points per game and is coming off a 17-point, 8-rebound effort against FAU. He scored 28 points in a double-overtime loss to Kennesaw State on Nov. 26. New Mexico’s defense, allowing just 70.7 points per game, will be tested by an FGCU offense that averages 84.3 points but has shown vulnerability on the road. The Eagles are 1-3 in true road games this season, with the lone win coming at Samford. This game represents a final nonconference tune-up for both squads before league play intensifies. New Mexico opens Mountain West Conference action at Boise State on Dec. 30, while Florida Gulf Coast begins ASUN play at Central Arkansas on Jan. 1. For the Eagles, a win in the daunting environment of The Pit would be a signature victory. For the Lobos, it is an opportunity to solidify their resume and maintain momentum before the holiday break. Tip-off is set for Sunday afternoon.
