GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging Buffalo team riding a six-game win streak will look to continue its dominant start when it visits a struggling East Carolina squad on Sunday at Williams Arena. The Bulls (9-1) have been one of the nation’s early surprises, with their only loss a 77-69 setback to Saint Bonaventure on Dec. 6. They are coming off an 83-79 road victory at Maryland-Baltimore County on Tuesday, where Tim Oboh scored 19 points. Buffalo is led by guard Daniel Freitag, who has been a model of consistency. The standout is averaging 21.4 points over his last seven games, including a 33-point performance in a win over Vermont on Nov. 18. In the win over UMBC, he added 17 points and six rebounds. East Carolina (3-7) has lost three straight and seven of its last eight, most recently a 67-54 home loss to Appalachian State on Thursday. The Pirates’ offense has frequently stalled, failing to reach 70 points in six of their 10 games. Guard Jordan Riley has been a bright spot, carrying the scoring load for ECU. He is averaging 20.3 points per game and poured in 26 in the loss to Appalachian State. He has scored 18 or more points in seven consecutive contests. The matchup pits Buffalo’s high-powered offense, which has scored 80 or more points six times, against an East Carolina defense that has allowed 77 or more points in six of its seven losses. This is the final non-conference tune-up for both teams before league play begins. Buffalo opens Mid-American Conference action at Western Michigan on Dec. 20, while East Carolina hosts Presbyterian on Dec. 17 before a daunting trip to North Carolina on Dec. 22.
