(Interstat) — The Campbell Fightin’ Camels look to build on a historic offensive performance when they host the struggling Ball State Cardinals in a nonconference men’s basketball game Sunday at John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center. Campbell (4-5) is coming off a 149-62 rout of Virginia-Lynchburg on Dec. 7, a game in which junior Chris Fields recorded a rare quadruple-double with 23 points, 22 rebounds, 11 assists and one block. Fields has been a consistent force, scoring in double figures in five straight games. “Chris is impacting the game in every way right now,“ Campbell coach Kevin McGeehan said. “His versatility is key for us.“ Ball State (3-7) seeks to end a two-game skid after a 64-68 home loss to South Dakota State on Tuesday. The Cardinals have lost five of their last six, with their only win in that stretch coming against Le Moyne. Guard Joey Hart led Ball State with 18 points in the loss to South Dakota State, bouncing back from a quiet 3-point outing at Evansville on Dec. 3. The Cardinals will need his scoring punch against a Campbell team averaging 91.2 points per game at home. “Joey has the ability to get hot and carry us,“ Ball State coach Michael Lewis said. “We need that consistent energy on both ends.“ Campbell’s record is bolstered by wins over non-Division I opponents Mid-Atlantic Christian and Virginia-Lynchburg, but it includes a competitive road loss at Penn State (76-87). Ball State’s schedule has been challenging, with road losses to Wisconsin, Indiana State and Evansville. The matchup features a contrast in tempo. Campbell pushes the pace, while Ball State has been held under 65 points in six of its seven losses. Containing Fields and limiting transition opportunities will be paramount for the Cardinals. This is the first meeting between the programs. Campbell heads to Gonzaga next Wednesday, while Ball State hosts Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 20.
