SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging Stanford squad looks to rebound from a heartbreaking loss when it visits a hot-shooting Colby Garland and San Jose State in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday. The Cardinal (7-2) enter the 6 p.m. PST tipoff at the Event Center coming off a 75-74 home loss to UNLV last Sunday, a game decided on a last-second shot. Stanford had won six of its previous seven, including a tight 78-77 road victory over Saint Louis. Stanford will lean on forward Oskar Giltay, who is coming off a dominant rebounding performance despite the loss. He grabbed 14 rebounds to go with nine points and two blocks in 22 minutes against UNLV. In a win over Portland on Dec. 1, he scored 15 points. The Spartans (5-5) have found their rhythm offensively, winning three of their last four, including an 89-83 overtime victory against Long Beach State on Tuesday. The catalyst has been guard Colby Garland, who is averaging 24.3 points and 4.5 assists over his last two games. He poured in a season-high 27 points in 40 minutes against the Beach. San Jose State’s offense will be tested by a Stanford defense that has held opponents to 72.2 points per game. The Cardinal have been efficient on offense, scoring 80.2 points per contest. This game serves as a final tune-up before both teams enter challenging stretches. Stanford begins a gauntlet featuring games against Notre Dame, Louisville and a trip to Virginia and Virginia Tech. San Jose State opens Mountain West Conference play at New Mexico on Dec. 20, followed by a home game against league powerhouse San Diego State. Stanford leads the all-time series 72-28, but the teams have not met since 2019. The Spartans will aim to use their home court and Garland’s scoring prowess to pull an early-season upset against their Bay Area rival.
