Preview: New Mexico Lobos at VCU Rams RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — Two teams riding winning streaks will clash Wednesday night when the New Mexico Lobos visit the VCU Rams in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup at the Siegel Center. The Lobos (7-2) have won four straight, including a dominant 98-71 victory over Santa Clara last Saturday. The Rams (6-3) have won three consecutive games, most recently an 83-57 rout of Samford last Friday. New Mexico’s surge has been fueled by efficient offense, scoring 93 or more points in three of its last four wins. Guard Deyton Albury has been a catalyst, averaging 18.3 points and 5.3 assists over the last three games. He poured in 22 points with six assists against Santa Clara. VCU counters with its own high-scoring guard in Terrence Hill. The sophomore has been on a tear, scoring 21 and 22 points, respectively, in his last two outings. He is shooting 58% from the field during the Rams’ three-game win streak. The game features a contrast in schedules. New Mexico’s losses came on a neutral court to Nebraska and on the road at rival New Mexico State. VCU’s defeats have all come away from home against Utah State, North Carolina State and Vanderbilt. Defensive pressure will be a key factor. VCU, under its trademark “Havoc” style, forces an average of 15 turnovers per game at home. New Mexico’s offense, which averages just 10.8 turnovers, will be tested in a hostile road environment. This marks the first meeting between the programs since 2012. For New Mexico, it is the final major nonconference test before Mountain West Conference play begins later this month. For VCU, it represents a resume-building opportunity against a high-major opponent before Atlantic 10 competition. Following this game, New Mexico returns home to face Florida Gulf Coast on Dec. 14. VCU remains at home to host Niagara on Dec. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday.
