SAN MARCOS, Texas (Interstat) ā Two teams looking to build momentum before conference play begins will meet Wednesday night when the Southern Jaguars visit the Texas State Bobcats at Strahan Coliseum. Southern (4-4) enters on a two-game winning streak, including a 101-48 rout of Louisiana Christian on Dec. 1. The Jaguarsā offense has been potent, averaging 92.1 points per game, but they have also allowed 90.6 points per contest. Their four losses have come against higher-division opponents, including a double-overtime 99-93 defeat at Washington. The Jaguars are led by dynamic guard Michael Jacobs, who has scored at least 22 points in five straight games. He is coming off a 22-point, 8-assist performance against Louisiana Christian and nearly posted a double-double with 22 points and 9 assists in a win at Northwestern State on Nov. 29. Texas State (6-5) has dropped three consecutive games, most recently a 77-72 loss at Rice on Dec. 3. The Bobcats have relied on a stronger defense, holding opponents to 66.5 points per game. Their schedule has been less taxing than Southernās, with four of their six wins coming at home against in-state foes. Guard Mark Drone has been a bright spot for the Bobcats during their skid, scoring a season-high 23 points in the loss at Rice. He leads the team in scoring during this three-game stretch. Wednesdayās contest is a final non-conference tune-up for both programs. Southern will embark on a challenging three-game road trip after this, facing California Baptist, Baylor and Illinois. Texas State opens Sun Belt Conference play at home against Arkansas State on Dec. 17. The matchup pits Southernās high-octane offense against Texas Stateās more methodical, defensive-minded approach. Containing Jacobs will be the primary task for the Bobcatsā backcourt, while the Jaguars must find a way to generate stops against a Texas State team eager to snap its losing streak on its home floor. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
