Preview: Minnesota at Purdue in Big Ten Men’s Basketball WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — The Purdue Boilermakers look to rebound from their first loss of the season when they host the Minnesota Golden Gophers in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball matchup Wednesday at Mackey Arena. Purdue (8-1) saw its eight-game win streak snapped decisively in an 81-58 home loss to Iowa State on Saturday. The Boilermakers, who have been a dominant force offensively, were held to a season-low in points and shot just 32.8% from the field. Star guard Braden Smith, a preseason All-American, will be central to their response. He averages 12.1 points and a team-high 7.8 assists per game, but was limited to 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting against the Cyclones. Minnesota (5-4) enters with momentum from a 73-64 home win over Indiana last Wednesday. The Golden Gophers have been inconsistent, however, alternating wins and losses over their past six games. Their success hinges heavily on the scoring of transfer wing Cade Tyson, who averages 20.6 points per game. Tyson has scored 17 or more points in seven of nine games this season, including a 29-point performance against Santa Clara on Nov. 28. The matchup features a stark contrast in styles. Purdue, under coach Matt Painter, boasts one of the nation’s most efficient offenses, averaging 86.2 points per game. Minnesota, led by coach Ben Johnson, averages 70.7 points and will need a disciplined defensive effort to slow the Boilermakers’ attack. Purdue has won the last eight meetings in the series. Minnesota’s last victory at Mackey Arena came on Feb. 26, 2017. For Purdue, this game begins a challenging stretch that includes a home showdown with Marquette on Saturday. Minnesota continues a tough early conference slate before a run of non-conference games later this month. Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST Wednesday. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
