Struggling Long Beach State Visits San Jose State in Non-Conference Finale SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — The San Jose State Spartans look to build on a decisive win and climb above .500 when they host the struggling Long Beach State 49ers in a non-conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at the Event Center. The Spartans (4-5) are coming off an 86-69 victory over San Diego last Friday, a game in which they shot 54% from the field. Guard Colby Garland led the way with 20 points and five assists, continuing a strong start to his season. Garland is averaging 16.4 points and 4.3 assists over his last seven games, providing a consistent offensive spark for San Jose State. Long Beach State (2-8) seeks to halt a two-game skid after falling 80-74 to UC San Diego last Saturday. The 49ers have lost eight of their last nine, with their only wins coming against San Diego and non-Division I opponent Nobel University. A bright spot has been the play of guard Petar Majstorovic, who is averaging 16.1 points over his last seven contests. He scored 23 points in a loss at Portland and 18 in the most recent defeat. The 49ers’ offense has shown flashes, with Gavin Sykes (20 points) and Rob Diaz (12 points, five assists) joining Majstorovic in double figures against UC San Diego. However, defensive consistency has been an issue, allowing an average of 78.6 points per game. For San Jose State, balance was key in the win over San Diego, with Adrian Myers adding 20 points and Yaphet Moundi contributing 18. The Spartans will aim for a similar inside-out attack against a Long Beach State defense that has struggled to string together stops. This game concludes the non-conference schedule for both teams. San Jose State will host Stanford on Saturday before beginning Mountain West Conference play. Long Beach State’s next game is Dec. 18 against Pepperdine, ahead of its Big West Conference slate. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST Tuesday at the Event Center on the San Jose State campus.
