FORT WORTH, Texas (Interstat) — An undefeated LSU squad faces its toughest road test of the young season Sunday when the Tigers meet Texas Tech at Lupton Stadium. The Tigers (8-0) are one of 12 remaining unbeaten teams in Division I men’s basketball but needed overtime to escape Boston College, 78-69, on Wednesday. LSU’s high-powered offense, averaging 90.1 points per game, will be challenged by a Red Raiders defense allowing just 68.6. Texas Tech (6-2), receiving votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll, has shown resilience, winning close games against Wake Forest and Wyoming but falling to power conference foes Purdue and Illinois. The Red Raiders will look to leverage their home-court advantage in a neutral-site setting to hand LSU its first loss. The matchup features two of the nation’s most dynamic players. LSU is led by guard Dedan Thomas, who is averaging 16.1 points and 6.6 assists. Thomas scored 23 points with seven assists in the overtime win at Boston College and has recorded double-digit assists once this season. Texas Tech counters with forward JT Toppin, a versatile force averaging 18.8 points and 8.4 rebounds. Toppin is coming off a 27-point performance against Wyoming and a 19-point, 16-rebound double-double against New Orleans. His season high is 35 points in the narrow loss at Illinois. In LSU’s last outing, Marquel Sutton added 18 points alongside Thomas’s 23. For Texas Tech in its win over Wyoming, LeJuan Watts contributed 19 points and Christian Anderson dished out five assists to complement Toppin’s scoring. The game is a final non-conference showcase for both programs before league play begins in January. LSU opens Southeastern Conference action at Texas A&M on Jan. 3, while Texas Tech starts its Big 12 schedule at home against Oklahoma State the same day. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CST Sunday.
