FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Interstat) — A surging Iona men’s basketball team will look to extend its winning momentum when it visits Sacred Heart in a non-conference matchup Sunday at the William Pitt Center. The Gaels (6-2) enter off a dominant 89-66 road victory at Delaware on Monday. The Pioneers (3-5) snapped a three-game skid with an 87-80 win at Mount Saint Mary’s on Wednesday. Iona, representing the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, has shown a potent offense, averaging 85.1 points per game. Its success is fueled by guard CJ Anthony, who is coming off a 26-point performance against Delaware. Over his last seven games, Anthony is averaging 15.6 points and 5.3 assists, showcasing his role as a primary scorer and facilitator. Sacred Heart, which will rely on the scoring of guard Dashon Gittens, seeks consistency. Gittens averages 16.1 points and poured in 23 in the win over Mount Saint Mary’s. The Pioneers’ defense, allowing 84.6 points per game, will be tested by Iona’s up-tempo attack. The Gaels’ two losses came in narrow fashion, a five-point defeat to Green Bay and a road loss at Akron where they allowed 96 points. Sacred Heart’s victories have come against Holy Cross, Mount Saint Mary’s and Division III Merchant Marine, while struggling against high-major opponents like Penn State and Villanova. This is the first meeting between the programs since the 2019-20 season. For Iona, it is the final tune-up before a Dec. 10 home game against Bryant. Sacred Heart hits the road for its next contest at NJIT on Dec. 13. Tip-off is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
