BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — Two teams looking to steady their nonconference seasons will meet Sunday when the Cornell Big Red visit the Samford Bulldogs at Pete Hanna Center. Cornell (5-4) arrives after a two-game swing through Virginia resulted in a pair of double-digit losses. The Big Red fell 99-81 at George Mason on Tuesday before a 93-80 defeat at Towson on Wednesday. Despite the losses, guard Adam Hinton has been a consistent bright spot, averaging 18 points over those two contests. The junior is Cornell’s leading scorer this season, having reached double figures in seven of nine games. Samford (4-6) seeks to end a three-game skid, most recently a lopsided 83-57 loss at VCU on Friday. The Bulldogs have struggled away from home, with all six losses coming on the road. Their last home game was a 62-77 loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 19. Guard Isaiah Campbell-Finch will be a key for the Bulldogs’ offense; he scored a season-high 21 points in an overtime win at Texas Southern on Nov. 12 but has been held to 12 or fewer in four of his last five outings. The game represents a final tune-up before both teams break for exams. Cornell, which averages over 87 points per game, will look to exploit a Samford defense that has allowed 80.6 points per contest. The Bulldogs will aim to leverage home-court advantage and improve their defensive cohesion before a soft stretch of home games later in December. Sunday’s matchup is the first-ever meeting between the programs. Following this contest, Cornell travels to Albany on Dec. 21, while Samford hosts Bryan College on Dec. 15.
