ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Interstat) ā Service academy rivals will meet on the hardwood Sunday when the Navy Midshipmen host the Air Force Falcons in a nonconference menās basketball matchup at Alumni Hall. Navy (5-5) enters the contest looking to build momentum after a 66-59 road win at Delaware State on Wednesday. The Midshipmen have been inconsistent, mixing decisive wins over teams like Gardner-Webb and NJIT with double-digit losses to power conference opponents and a recent home stumble against Southeastern Louisiana. A key performer for Navy is guard Mike Woods, who is coming off a 16-point effort against Delaware State. Woods has shown scoring versatility, posting 17 points against Gardner-Webb and 12 against Washington College, but was held to single digits in three of Navyās five losses. His production often serves as a barometer for the Midshipmenās offensive flow. Air Force (3-7) seeks to halt a three-game skid, most recently an 80-65 home loss to Pacific on Wednesday. The Falconsā season has been defined by offensive struggles, failing to reach 70 points in seven of their ten games and scoring 65 or fewer in five of their seven defeats. The Falcons will lean heavily on guard Lucas Hobin, their most consistent offensive threat. Hobin is averaging 17.4 points over his last five games, including a 27-point outburst in a win over IU Indy on Nov. 23 and 19 points in the loss to Pacific. When Hobin scores efficiently, Air Forceās chances improve significantly; the team is 3-1 when he scores 16 or more points and 0-6 when he does not. Historically, games between these academies are physical, defensive-minded affairs. Navy will aim to control the pace at home, while Air Force needs to find supplementary scoring behind Hobin to ease its recent burdens. This contest serves as a final tune-up before both teams dive into their conference schedules. Navy begins Patriot League play in January, while Air Force opens its Mountain West Conference slate on Dec. 17 at San Diego State. Tipoff is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
