TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Interstat) — The Alabama men’s basketball team, riding high after a marquee win, looks to avoid a letdown when it hosts Texas-San Antonio on Sunday at Coleman Coliseum. The Crimson Tide (6-2) are coming off a 90-84 victory over Clemson on Wednesday, a performance fueled by a career-high 29 points from sophomore guard Labaron Philon. Philon has been on a tear, averaging 24.4 points over his last five games and establishing himself as one of the Southeastern Conference’s most dynamic scorers. “He’s playing with tremendous confidence right now,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said of Philon. “When he’s aggressive and getting into the paint, it opens everything up for our offense.” Alabama’s high-powered attack, which has scored 90 or more points in five of its eight games, will face a UTSA squad seeking stability. The Roadrunners (4-4) have alternated wins and losses over their past six games and are looking to rebound from a disappointing 82-58 home loss to South Alabama last Sunday. UTSA will lean on guard Jamir Simpson, who has been a consistent bright spot. Simpson is averaging 20.0 points per game and has scored 17 or more in six straight contests, including a 22-point effort in the win over Georgia Southern on Nov. 25. “Jamir gives us a chance every afternoon,” UTSA coach Steve Henson said. “We need others to step up and match his intensity, especially in a tough environment like Tuscaloosa.” The Roadrunners have struggled away from home, with all four losses coming on the road or at neutral sites. Containing Alabama’s transition game and prolific three-point shooting will be their primary challenge. For Alabama, this game serves as a final tune-up before a pivotal stretch that includes a neutral-site clash with Arizona next Friday and the start of SEC play in January. The Tide have shown vulnerability defensively, allowing an average of 85.5 points in their two losses to Purdue and Gonzaga. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon. Alabama holds a 2-0 all-time advantage over UTSA, with the last meeting occurring in 2012.
