IRVINE, Calif. (Interstat) — The UC Irvine Anteaters look to build on a road win and extend their early season momentum when they host the Cal State Northridge Matadors in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday. The Anteaters (5-4) are returning home after a 72-63 victory at San Jose State on Nov. 30. UC Irvine has won two of its last three games. The Matadors (4-4) enter riding high after an 87-66 home victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday. Cal State Northridge’s offense erupted for 87 points in its latest win, a positive sign for a team that has shown both potent scoring and defensive struggles this season. Derin Saran led the way with 24 points. UC Irvine has relied on a stronger defense, holding opponents under 65 points in three of its five victories. This matchup at Bren Events Center presents a contrast in recent rhythms. The game is an early season meeting between Big West Conference opponents, though it will not count toward the league standings. The teams are scheduled to begin official conference play in January. Following this game, UC Irvine will not play again until hosting Belmont on Dec. 19. Cal State Northridge will host Fresno State on Dec. 10.
