Preview: Ohio State Visits Northwestern in Big Ten Opener EVANSTON, Ill. (Interstat) — A surging Ohio State looks to rebound from its first loss when it opens Big Ten Conference play on the road against Northwestern on Saturday. The Buckeyes (6-1) travel to Welsh-Ryan Arena following a narrow 67-66 defeat at Pittsburgh last Friday, a game in which they squandered a late lead. Northwestern (5-3) seeks consistency after dropping its last two contests, including a 85-73 loss at Wisconsin on Wednesday. Ohio State’s early success has been fueled by balance and efficiency, averaging 88.1 points per game. Forward Devin Royal has emerged as a primary offensive threat, averaging 14.3 points. He scored 22 in the loss at Pitt and is coming off a 17-point, four-assist performance in a 113-60 rout of Mount Saint Mary’s. Northwestern will counter with its own standout forward in Arrinten Page. The sophomore is averaging 17.6 points and has been a force, scoring 21 points with three blocks against Wisconsin. His versatility was on display in a win at South Carolina on Nov. 23, where he posted 10 points, three rebounds and six assists. The Wildcats have shown a high ceiling, scoring 110 points in a season-opening win over Cleveland State and securing a road win at South Carolina. However, defensive lapses have plagued them in close losses to Oklahoma State, Virginia and Wisconsin. For Ohio State, the focus is on closing. Bruce Thornton, who had 18 points against Pitt, will run the point against a Northwestern backcourt featuring Jordan Clayton, who dished four assists against the Badgers. This matchup begins a critical stretch for both teams. Ohio State faces Illinois next Tuesday before a neutral-site clash with West Virginia. Northwestern hosts Jackson State next Saturday before visiting Butler on Dec. 20. Saturday’s tipoff is set for 5 p.m. EST. The Buckeyes have won four of the last five meetings, but the Wildcats won the most recent game in Evanston, 69-63, on Jan. 1, 2025.
