Preview: Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles at No. -- Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Interstat) — The Miami Hurricanes look to continue a strong start to the season when they host the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday at Watsco Center. Miami (7-2) enters riding a two-game winning streak, including a 75-66 road victory at Mississippi on Tuesday. The Hurricanes have been led by the consistent backcourt play of junior guard Tru Washington, who has scored 17 points in three of his last four outings, including the win over the Rebels. Southern Miss (5-3) also arrives with momentum after an 82-75 win at Radford on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles have won three straight, largely fueled by the recent surge of forward Djahi Binet. Over the last three games, Binet is averaging 14.3 points and has logged 34 minutes in a starting role. He scored 17 points with two assists and two blocks against Radford. The Hurricanes present a significant step up in competition for Southern Miss. Miami’s two losses came against then-Florida and BYU on a neutral court. The Golden Eagles’ three defeats have all come on the road, including an overtime loss at South Carolina and a setback at Grambling. Miami’s offense has been potent, scoring 99 or more points in three home games this season. They will test a Southern Miss defense that allowed 83 points in a narrow loss at South Carolina. The Golden Eagles counter with balanced scoring; in the win over Radford, Isaac Taveras and Tylik Weeks joined Binet in scoring 18 points apiece. This is the final nonconference tune-up for Miami before it begins Atlantic Coast Conference play on Dec. 30 against Pittsburgh. Southern Miss visits Mississippi in Biloxi next Saturday before opening Sun Belt Conference action in January. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
