Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Preview of Monmouth at Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball ATLANTA (Interstat) — Two teams with identical records and a need for momentum will meet Saturday when the Monmouth Hawks visit the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Hank McCamish Pavilion. Both teams enter the 5 p.m. EST tipoff at 5-4 overall. Monmouth arrives having snapped a two-game skid with a 63-58 home win over Princeton on Wednesday. Georgia Tech looks to rebound from an 85-73 loss to Mississippi State that same afternoon, which extended its losing streak to three games. The matchup features a compelling duel between two high-scoring wings. Monmouth will lean on junior guard Jason RiveraTorres, who is averaging 18.0 points over his last five games. He scored 20 points in the win over Princeton and has topped the 20-point mark four times this season, including a 21-point, 11-rebound performance at Le Moyne on Nov. 29. Georgia Tech’s offensive catalyst is senior guard Kowacie Reeves, who is coming off a season-high 23 points against Mississippi State. Reeves has scored in double figures in five of eight games this season and provides a primary scoring threat for a Yellow Jackets squad that has struggled offensively during its losing streak, averaging just 69.3 points in losses to DePaul, Drake and Mississippi State. Monmouth has shown resilience, winning three games by three points or fewer, including an overtime victory over Robert Morris on Nov. 23. The Hawks have balanced RiveraTorres’ scoring with contributions from players like Cornelius Robinson, who added 13 points against Princeton. Georgia Tech’s early schedule has been a mix of dominant home wins over mid-major opponents and struggles against high-major competition. The Yellow Jackets’ defense, which allowed an average of 81 points during their three-game slide, will be tested by a Monmouth team averaging 73.2 points per game. This non-conference contest represents a final tune-up for both sides before heavier stretches of their schedules. Monmouth opens Coastal Athletic Association play on Dec. 31, while Georgia Tech begins Atlantic Coast Conference action on the same day at Duke. The all-time series is tied 1-1, with Georgia Tech winning the most recent meeting 87-49 in Atlanta on Dec. 19, 2015.
