GREENVILLE, S.C. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking consistency will meet Saturday when the Harvard Crimson visit the Furman Paladins in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup at Timmons Arena. Harvard (5-5) arrives after a narrow 78-71 road loss at Massachusetts on Wednesday. The Crimson have alternated wins and losses over their past seven games. Furman (5-4) is coming off a high-scoring 97-88 victory at Elon on Wednesday, which snapped a two-game skid. The game features a compelling backcourt duel between two dynamic scorers. Harvard’s fortunes hinge heavily on the hot hand of guard Robert Hinton. The sophomore is averaging 19.1 points per game and is capable of explosive performances, as evidenced by his 35-point outing at UMass and a 34-point game at Boston University. His consistency, however, has fluctuated. Furman will counter with guard Cooper Bowser, who is averaging 13.6 points. Bowser is coming off a strong 19-point, three-block performance against Elon and has scored in double figures in five of his last six contests. He provides a steadying presence for the Paladins’ offense. Both teams have shown resilience in close games. Harvard’s last five contests have been decided by an average of 5.2 points, including a 56-53 win over Bryant and the one-point loss to BU. Furman edged Richmond 73-72 on Nov. 27 but has also suffered double-digit losses to Northern Iowa and Illinois State. Defensive intensity will be a point of emphasis. Harvard allows 70.2 points per game, while Furman surrenders 71.6. The Paladins, who average 76.8 points, will look to push the tempo at home, where they are 3-1 this season. This contest represents a final tune-up before both teams enter extended breaks for exams. Harvard does not play again until hosting Holy Cross on Dec. 20. Furman will host Bob Jones University on Dec. 9 before its exam hiatus. Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon in Travelers Rest.
