CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking consistency will meet Saturday when the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks visit the Chattanooga Mocs in a nonconference men’s basketball game at McKenzie Arena. Southeast Missouri State (3-6) is coming off an 88-57 rout of non-Division I St. Mary-Woods on Tuesday, but had dropped its previous three games against Division I opponents. The Redhawks’ wins have come against lower-tier competition, while they have struggled on the road, including losses at Iowa, Northern Arizona and Missouri. Chattanooga (4-4) has followed a similar pattern, mixing decisive wins over smaller programs like Tenn. Wesleyan and Union Commonwealth with double-digit losses to UNLV, Florida Gulf Coast and, most recently, a 70-64 home defeat to Tennessee State last Sunday. A key matchup will feature backcourt play. Southeast Missouri State guard BJ Ward has been a catalyst, averaging 12.3 points and 4.0 assists over his last four games. He scored 19 points in a loss to Lipscomb on Nov. 29. For the Mocs, forward Tate Darner provides a scoring punch, coming off a 16-point, 4-rebound performance against Tennessee State. Darner is averaging 12.0 points over his last three contests. The Redhawks will need production beyond Ward. Landren Blocker (14 points) and Braxton Stacker (10 points, 5 assists) were key in the last win, but sustaining that against a Division I foe has been a challenge. Chattanooga will look to control the glass, where Sebastian Hartmann grabbed eight rebounds in the last outing. This game represents a final tune-up against a peer-level opponent before each team’s schedule intensifies. Southeast Missouri State visits Tennessee Tech on Dec. 18 to begin a tough stretch. Chattanooga hosts Oakwood on Dec. 9 before a neutral-site clash with Auburn on Dec. 13. Saturday’s contest tips off at 2 p.m. EST. The Mocs hold a 4-2 all-time series advantage, with the teams last meeting in 2017.
