BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — Two of the state’s hottest teams will meet Saturday when the Pacific Tigers visit the California Golden Bears in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup at Haas Pavilion. Both teams enter with strong early-season records. Pacific is 7-2, while California sits at 7-1. The Tigers are riding a three-game win streak, most recently an 80-65 road victory at Air Force on Wednesday. Elias Ralph led the way with 31 points. California is also coming off a conference win, having defeated Utah 79-72 on Tuesday. Guard Dai Dai Ames paced the Golden Bears with 25 points, while Justin Pippen added 23. The Tigers’ two losses have come by a combined three points, including a one-point defeat at Nevada. Their offense has averaged 73.4 points per game. California, under first-year coach Mark Madsen, has shown balance, averaging 81.1 points per contest. This game represents a final tune-up against in-state competition before both teams embark on challenging stretches. Pacific begins West Coast Conference play later this month, while California will face a daunting Atlantic Coast Conference slate in January. Saturday’s matchup will tip off at 7 p.m. PST.
