SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — The surging Santa Clara Broncos, off to their best start in years, host the Utah Tech Trailblazers in a nonconference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Leavey Center. Santa Clara (7-1) has won seven of its first eight games, including an impressive 86-75 road victory at Minnesota last Friday. Christian Hammond led the way with 20 points in that win. The Broncos’ lone loss came by a single point, 71-70, at Saint Louis on Nov. 27. They are 3-0 at home this season, winning those contests by an average of 26.3 points. Utah Tech (5-5) arrives after a 77-69 home win over UC Riverside on Saturday. Ethan Potter scored a career-high 26 points in the victory, while Noah Bolanga added 12 points and eight rebounds. The Trailblazers have struggled on the road, however, going 1-4 away from home with losses at Arizona, Arizona State and Hawaii. Their lone road win came in overtime at South Dakota to open the season. Santa Clara holds a clear advantage in early-season momentum, while Utah Tech will look to find consistency and secure a rare road victory against a high-major opponent.
