Preview: NBA Showdown Features Surging Pistons, Cavaliers CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The Detroit Pistons, owners of the NBA’s best record, look to continue their dominant season when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. The Pistons (45-14) enter on a three-game winning streak and have won 10 of their last 12. They are coming off a 106-92 road victory over Orlando on Sunday. Detroit’s last loss came in overtime, 122-119, against these same Cavaliers just five days ago in Detroit. That recent history adds a layer of urgency for the Cavaliers (38-24), who sit firmly in the Eastern Conference playoff picture but are looking to close the gap on the conference’s elite. Cleveland has won seven of its last 10, including a 106-102 win at Brooklyn on Sunday. All eyes will be on the point guard matchup between Detroit’s Cade Cunningham and Cleveland’s James Harden. Cunningham is playing at an MVP level, averaging 25.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 10.1 assists over his last 10 games. He posted a triple-double with 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in the overtime loss to Cleveland last week. Harden, the veteran leader for the Cavs, is averaging 19.4 points and 8.0 assists over his last 10 contests. He nearly had a triple-double with 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the win over Brooklyn. The Pistons have taken two of three meetings against Cleveland this season, including a 114-110 win here on Jan. 4. In the most recent clash, Detroit’s Tobias Harris scored 31 points and Cunningham’s triple-double wasn’t enough as Cleveland’s Evan Mobley (28 points, 13 rebounds) and Jarrett Allen (24 points, 17 rebounds) controlled the interior. Containing that Cavaliers frontcourt duo will be a key for Detroit, which has been bolstered by consistent contributions from Harris and Ausar Thompson. Cleveland’s defense, ranked in the top 10, will face its toughest test against a Pistons offense that has scored 122 or more points in four of its last five wins. Tuesday’s contest is the final regular-season meeting between the Central Division rivals and could carry significant seeding implications. Following this game, Detroit embarks on a two-game road trip to San Antonio and Miami, while Cleveland begins a four-game homestand against Boston and Philadelphia this weekend.
